In the interest of the biographic arts, the following is an abbreviated record of the origin of The Elmwood Vigilante'.
Late night in a rust belt based recording studio. The springtime of his loving, 1995. A young man who loves listening to rock records attempts to create his very own rock recordings. The result is primitive audio structures, experimental and unsettling, but a far cry from the rock music he holds so dearly. Still, a product was created and he was satisfied enough to validate the project with a hastily chosen name. Sadly, this would be the only work to come out of the rust belt era Elmwood Vigilante'. The young man returns to listening to his beloved rock records.
Fast-forward four years later.. the young man has long since abandoned the rust belt for the windburned mertocenter of Jersey City. Deep within the coldness of his winter, 1999, The Elmwood Vigilante' resurfaces. Aided by technology (he got a computer), new doors were opened. Suddenly, the sounds swimming in his brain were escaping onto the digital plane. For the next few seasons, The Elmwood Vigilante' wrote and recorded Up What - The Y2K Strategy and The Potato Police EP. Both collections feature experimental song structure, a shitload of reverb and echo, and the occasional swear word. While again not reaching the heights set by the rockers he admired, the writing was on the wall. The Elmwood Vigilante' had arrived.
The concept album is often attempted but rarely pulled off. Memories of teenage headphones delivering songs with names like Cygnus X-1 and The Fountain Of Lamneth. Fifty straight minutes of seamless storytelling. These memories were held in a warm and special place and for his next project, The Elmwood Vigilante' would attempt to create one of these prize jewel of rock glory. The jewel would be named 30Av.
Why a concept album? Why not? In early 2000, The Elmwood Vigilante' once again packed his things, moving deeper into the population center of New York, NY. Daily living in his Queens neighborhood, just off the N line at 30Av, along with fears, delights, observations, hallucinations, days and nights.. all of these slowly took shape in the form of songs. Soon it became obvious that there was a common theme running through this music or at least it seemed that way. In September 2000, 30Av was completed. At a running time of exactly 30 minutes, this concept album is a soundtrack for the city.. through the eyes of a newcomer.. from the streets of the city and behind the walls of a domicile. Though still too early to tell, some predict this album to touch the hearts of millions for hundred of years.
What is next for the Elmwood Vigilante'? As the year 2001 came to a close, the pioneer of Thought Rock was busy recording a follow-up to 30av. The world waits with baskets of ripe fruits. Look for a release in the spring of 2002.
